چکیده

We analyze the dynamical properties of ?1500 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] ? ?2.0) halo stars, based primarily on medium-resolution spectroscopic data from HK and Hamburg/ESO surveys. These data, collected over past 30 yr, are supplemented by a number calibration stars other small samples, along with astrometric information Gaia DR2. apply clustering algorithm to 4D energy-action space sample, identify set 38 dynamically tagged groups (DTGs), containing between 5 member stars. Many these DTGs can be associated previously known prominent substructures such as Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), Sequoia, Helmi Stream (HStr), Thamnos. Others identified smaller streams. 10 new well, many which have strongly retrograde orbits. also investigate possible connections our ?300 individual r-process-enhanced (RPE) recent literature compilation. find that several objects similar GSE (5), HStr (4), Sequoia (1), Rg5 indicating their progenitors might been important sources RPE in Galaxy. Additionally, newly shown at least two each (DTG-2: 3, DTG-7: 2; DTG-27: 2). Taken whole, results consistent ultra-faint and/or dwarf spheroidal galaxies birth environments r-process nucleosynthesis took place, then were disrupted Milky Way.

Mining the Galactic Halo for Very Metal-Poor Stars

We study the age and metallicity distribution function (MDF) of metal-poor stars in the Milky Way halo as a function of galactocentric radius by combining N-body simulations and semi-analytical methods. We find that the oldest stars populate the innermost region, while extremely metal-poor stars are more concentrated within r < 60 kpc. We predict that the MDF of [Fe/H]≤ −2 stars varies only ver...

Models for extremely metal-poor halo stars

Two alternative scenarios concerning the origin and evolution of extremely metal-poor halo stars are investigated. The first one assumes that the stars have been completely metal-free initially and produced observed carbon and nitrogen overabundances during the peculiar core helium flash typical for low-mass Population III stars. The second scenario assumes that the initial composition resulted...

Ongoing Large Surveys for Metal-Poor Stars in the Galactic Halo

We report on two major surveys for metal-poor stars in the galactic halo, the HK survey, and the Hamburg/ESO survey, which have been undertaken in order to provide targets for high-resolution spectroscopy with the Subaru HDS and other large telescopes. We compare basic properties of these two surveys and their current status, and add some historical remarks. The candidate selection procedures o...

Surface gravities of very metal-poor stars from Hipparcos parallaxes

Wediscuss some consequences for the determination of the surface gravity parameter of very metal-poor halo dwarfs in the new light shed upon these objects from the Hipparcos astrometry. Whereas it has become clear that standard spectroscopic LTE iron ionization equilibria are prone to systematic errors, in the sense, that stages of evolution are predicted that are actually not yet reached, the ...

Pop III Hypernova Nucleosynthesis and Abundances in Very Metal-Poor Halo Stars

We calculate evolution and nucleosynthesis in massive Pop III stars with M = 13 ∼ 270M⊙, and compare the results with abundances of very metal-poor halo stars. The observed abundances can be explained by the energetic core-collapse supernovae with M ∼ < 130M⊙ (“hypernovae”) but not by pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) with M ∼ 140 − 270M⊙. This result constrain the IMF for the Pop III and ver...
